Mexico Gems
Living in San Felipe, Baja California Norte, a couple of hours below Mexicali on the Sea of Cortez since 2005 has been a delight! It is a quiet little fishing village, who boast they have the largest and sweetest shrimp ever…and they aren’t lying. When you hear the word ‘Baja’, most people think Tijuana, Ensenada, and Cabo San Lucas, as they get the most press, but for my money you cannot beat the simplicity and genuineness of the locals of San Felipe. Apparently I am not the only one as there are almost as many American and Canadians here as Mexicans! I enjoy browsing through the Curio Shops, mostly to converse with the local merchants, but I have found a couple of items I feel would pair easily with my Band It Hat and Cap Bands
When you walk the beaches of the Sea of Cortez, you find hundreds of these Sand Dollars. The locals hand paint them into fish, cover with varnish. No two are alike. The only distinction is size and color range. A large sand Dollar is approximately 3 ˝ to 4” and a small is approximately 2 ˝ to 3”. I glued a pin backing on each, and they can be worn on a hat as a substitute for the tissue paper flower or on a lapel or decoration to a scarf.

On this same idea, these hand-painted ceramic suns would look cute as a substitute for a tissue paper flower. No two are alike. The only distinction is color. They are approximately 3” in diameter.
|
Carmen Rodriguez Medina of Curios Chava hand makes these large Tissue Paper Flowers and is also the maker of the smaller Tissue Paper Flowers that adorn my Band It Hat and Cap Bands.

When my son Matt and daughter-in-law, Julie visit they love the different cookies and candies in brightly colored wrappers that Mexico has to offer. Someone has taken these wrappers and woven them into a purse. A clever idea and one I feel would complement my Band It Hat and Cap Bands! Cristino Martinez Marcos and his shy wife Maria of Artesanas Guerrero are holding four of the sizes available. These have a zipper closure and are unlined. No matter where I take this bag, it gets favorable comments.
